He now plans, to break up nn organization which, he- says, fleeces young couples who start their life journeys*here in Crown Point.The certificate sale runs second to Kemp’s business but. is still in tho “big money** class according to the mayor.More than 10,000 of the -11,292 grooms who have gone through Lake county's marriage mill in the last seven years have paid $2 apiece for marriage certificates. At this rate, the clerk’s office has netted profits of approximately $75',000, since all of the certificates could have been bought for less than $5,-000.The certificate racket, Mayor Youkev estimates, is worth $10,000 or better each year to the person who happens to bo county clerk. With the numerous other fees that arc collected annually by the clerk, the job is estimated to be worth $50,000 a year.You key's only means of stopping the certificate sale is through an educational program* There is no legal resort, since the clerk’s office is within its rights in selling the certificates..
