Winthrop is no longer the ward of Thomas Monroe Turner, millionaire merchant; she is now his wife.The marriage ceremony was secretly performed in Greenwich, Conn., on January 20, and the fact did not become public until to-day, when all the marriages of the month were recorded by the town clerk. The license had not been filed until the last day allowed by the law.A fact that gave a tinge of mystery to the wedding was that the record showed the bride's name to he Margaret Higley, or Higby. She gave her age as twenty-five; birthplace, Canada: residence. Shelter Island, and said she was the daughter of Edwin H. Higley (or Higby). The record further stated that she was divorced.But Mr. Turner, who was at the Republican Club to-night, said, in response to a question over the telephone, that his bride's name was Miss Winthrop.Raised Dogs in Basement.Mr. Turner’s ward, having her residence at different times either In his mansion at 57 Remsen street, Brooklyn, or at “Never Never Land,” his estate on ShelterIsland, was known as Miss Winthrop. Sheconducted in the basement of the Remsen street house an extensive business of raising prize dogs. But, so far as known, neither in her business nor social circles was she known as Miss Higley. The record of her divorced condition was also a new fact to some.The present residence of the bride, who by her marriage becomes one of the wealthiest women in New York, was not learned to-night. Mr. Turner is stopping at the Republican Club, where he frequently lived before his marriage.The ceremony was performed in Greenwich by the Rev. H. B. Alley. The date of the license, January 16, four days before the ceremony, indicated that arrangements had been made in advance. The bridegroom’s age is given as fifty-five years.Turner Thrice Married.Mr. Turner was married twice before and twice divorced. He comes of a family which has given society leaders to New York. His first wife was Emilie R. Barnes, daughter of a Brooklyn publisher. They were married in 1882, and the wife obtained a divorce ten years later. Mrs.James Bloomfield, wife of one of Turner’s friends, was mentioned in the suit.About a year later Mr. Turner was married to Maude Muy, daughter of a boarding house proprietor In Manhattan.
