Long near Nevada, Mo., over four i months ago, left the body in an open field and drove Long's car back to Alabama.I Love for his wife and children was : given by Traywick as a motive for- i the slaying, officers said. He de-: clared that he wanted to come home■ to see his family, and also wanted- “to have some way to take them• around,” Traywick is quoted as say-■ ing.| Continued use of Long’s car led ’ to Traywick’s arrest near Clanton a• week ago. He was placed in the City ! Jail here and Missouri authoritiesnotified.' j At that time, Traywick announced ' j that he would fight extradition and 1 steadifastly maintained his innocence.‘ He was employed by a gas company 1 in Alabama when taken into custody.' | With Traywick’s purported con-’ | fession, which he is said to have giv-| en voluntarialy to Chief Stanfill before a notary public, a mystery which has baffled authorities for more than four months apparently has been solved.Chief Stanfill said that he expect-. ed Missouri officers within a few ; days to take Traywick back for trial.According to Chief Stanfill, Tray-1 wick outlined the details of the slay-ing, which took place at mindight i near the Missouri town. After hit-1 tin# long in the head with a hammer, Traywick drove into an open field ancf left the body there, officers said. Traywick is said to have admitted that he took a watch and about $30 from the body of the dead man.When asked if he and Long had any difficulty, Stanfill said that i Traywick told him, “No sir, we had no difficulty, but had a disagreement and I will tell you what it was. He was going to get his girl and take I her with us and I told him if he did | I would not go because I was a married man. That was what it was about.”Traywick emphatically denied that this had caused him to murder Long,| insisting that his love for his wife and children had caused him to do it, the Selma police official said.Following his confession Traywick is said to have declared that he had net enjoyed a night’s sleep since the slaying. He thanked Chief Stanfill for being kind enough to let his family visit him in jail.A portion of the signed confession, consisting of questions and answers, according to Chief Stanfill, follows:Q. “Did you kill W. T. Long?”A. “Yes, sir.”Q. “Now just go on and tell me the circumstances. What did you do and why did you do it?”A. “It was for the love of my wife and two little children that I did ft. It was not for myself or money or anything.Q. How did you kill him?”A. I did it with a hammer.Q. “Where did you get the hammer?”A. It was in the car.”Q. “How much money did you get off him?”A. “I don’t remember, but it was not but about three ten-dollar bills.” Q. Did you get his watch?”A. “Yes, sir,’’.When the prisoner was asked if there was anything else about the slaying that he wanted to say, Stanfill said that Traywick told him: “That is all I know about it except that I did not commit this murder for money or myself. I did it for the desire to come home to see my wife and children and to have some way to take my dear children around. That is why I killed him and took his car. I just loved my wife and children too much.”
