A poll tax of twenty-five cents for the county and fifty cents for the State was also Imposed.The heaviest tax-payer in Salt-creek township was Robert Ross who paid the enormous (?) sum of $4.28.There were only four persons in Jackson township who paid over five dollars tax. At that time Jackson was sparsely settled and beaver ponds and swamps made it a favorable place for chills and fevers. It was the last township in the countyto be brought under the control of the husbandmen, and is now the banner township of the county iu producing agricultural products.How time has changed Jackson!Fugit township, being the oldest township in the county, was the wealthiest in ,‘the county with the exception of Washington.The third heaviest tax-payer inlt;the county was Nathaniel .Robbins,of Sandjcreek township, who moved to Oregon iu 1852.Tile heaviest tax-payer in Claytownship was Dodridge Alley, whorepresented this county in the Legislature. He was a conspicuous fiaure iu Clay township at that time.
