Beginning with 1838 there were a fevr over 100 licenses issued each year. In 1840 tjie first marriage in the county was solemnized by a Catholic priest, Francis Link and Mary Hesler heifig married by Rev. Josph Frnding.in 1830 and 1840 the record of Rev. Daniel Stogsdill as champion marrying ^parson for many years previous was eclipsed by Rev. Amos Busgey a Methorist preacher who married sixteen couple to fourteen recorded in favor of Stogsdill. A son of Rev. Bassey visited Greensburr; in 18% and made a Republican speech. He held an important government job in Washington and took pleasure in recalling that he lived here when a small boy. Rev. Joseph G. Monfort, pastor of the Presbyterian church was called upon frequently to perform the marriage rite and had twelve couple to his credit. Rev. John Pavy, Baptist minister, had ten during the same period. Rev. James Conner pastor of the Christian church at Clarksburg had eight and Rev. John B. New of this city whowas a newcomer to the county performed five ceremonies. Other ministers were, Elias Millekan, David Douglas, Matthew Edder, Petor Gray jones Longv-Chesley Woodward, James -McEwen, Jacob Martin, George Havens, Samuel Ellis, A. ‘Leach, ThoMas Bird and John Press-ly. Among the. leading J. P's in the marying business were; James Blair,Asa Davis, S. Goodwin, George McLaughlin, Samuel Bryan, W. E. Crawford, T. E. Spillman* and J. A.
