Homeward B tend Fromare; Cook of Chicago; bound for Postville on a surprise Christmas visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs .Frank Bioxham of this city; al-niost met their dodih when struck at the top of the Guttenberg hill by a reckless aiito driver, about 10 o'clock oh Christmas eve. ■**•»• . * * i’ To get started on the story right let us turn back the pages of history to October 11th last, when Miss Jeanette Bloxhami daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bioxham of this city, and Everett'Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Cook of Waterloo, both former well known Postville young people, were married in Chicago. Mum had been the word with both of them since the happy event that joined their lives in wedlock, and they had been anxiously waiting for Christmas time to come ^ that they might make a honeymoon trip back to parents and old home town friends to tell them of it,Car Belonged to Lloyd Hein*Hence it was that on Thursday last they journeyed down to St. Charles, IU,, to see their friend, Lloyd Hein, also a former Postville boy, who is working on the Silver Glenn Dairy Farm at that place, who had suggested that they come that way, take his auto and drive to Postville with it to have it overhauled during their visit here and then drive it back again. Accordingly they left St. Charles last Thursday at 3:00 p. m., and were coming merrily along happy in the thought they were going home to give as well as to receive Christmas joy from their visit. Finally at ten o’clock that evening they reached Guttenberg, and were only about ah hour’s drive from Postville—and home. But fate had other plans. As they were driving up the hill this side of Guttenberg, at a point just north of Lakeside pa-villion, a car being driven at high speed from the opposite direction swung wide around the corner and headed straight for their car. To avoid a head-on collision Everett pulled sharply toward the middle of, the road hoping he might escape disaster, but the oncoming car hit them in the right front wheel and skidded their car about 15 feet, turning it half-way around, while the car that hit them turned over on its side, and both cars were completely wrecked. The Cook car was a Chevrolet coupe and the car that hit them a Buick touring.The car that hit them was being driven by the Lau brothers of Gut-. tenberg, both of whom are now doing a thirty days stretch in the Elkader jail for reckless driving.The force of the impact hurled Mrs. Cook head foremost through either the windshield or door of the car and thrown against the car, cutting and bruising her terribly and rendering her unconscious.A man living near the edge of the bluff in the vicinity of the wreck had heard the cars crash and came hurriedly to the scene with his auto, picking up the Cooks and taking them in-to Guttenberg to a doctor, where first aid was given and upon whose advice they secured an ambulance and both were brought to the home of her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Bioxham in this city.'/ V' .'..;, Mr, Cook, whp was driving, received an inj^ elbow that it required six stitches to close.1^*0 arrival here Di\ Kel-leher Jwas called; to attend Mrs. Cook, V: whose; ihjuries were, found to be a broken right leg above the knee, five scalp wounds that required thirteen stitches to close and other minor bruises and cuts.
