SPOILED II SURPRISEWEDDING OF JOSEPH. WARTTMAN AND MISS- GERTRUDE LOSAN SOLENM1ZED TUESDAY,GROOM WAS CAUTIOUSA Cruel Joker Telephoned Announcement of License Granted to Cedar Falls Paper.Recorder F. F. Knapp -was beseeeh-ed 'by an anxious gentleman from Cedar' Falls Tuesday to assist him in procuring a license from Clerk Bentley winch; would make two hearts glad during yuletide. The recorder was at the time seated in. his comfortable arm chair, thinking of the excellence of the Christmas spread, when he noticed the gentleman enter his officeat*the court house. Being well acquainted with the visitor and knowing him to be the junior , member of a prominent business firm, his salute was very cordial and the visitor was asked to take a .seat and talk over old times. . ., • .No sooner had the-visitor had time to reach; the . recorder’s side .than did he bend cautiously , o-ver his shoulder, and Whisper into his.-ear: ‘T .-.want .you to assist me to secure a. marriage; licensa.'” Recorder Knapp . grasping the situation at once exclaimed in a loud voice;. “You want a marriage: license!'' There were several people in the room at. the tine and a subdued' smile was visible on the faces of most of them. The visitor again whispered, “Please be careful, don't' speak so loud; people will hear. you and know what I am after. I don't want to let anyone know, desiring, to be married . and surprise my bachelor friends.” ! With this the recorder accompanied: his Cedar Falls friend to the - clerk'sE office ’and there and then swore out a “warrant” to make two hearts pulsate in eestacy. The document was carefully folded and-placed in the insidevest pocket of the groom-to-be, and no bme was lost in leaving the office. While the gentleman smole” a smile of sweet' content, the' telephone wire was used by friends who chanced to be in the recorder’s'office and overheard the conversation, informing the editor of the Cedar Falls Record who was ungrateful enough to print an announcement something like this:“A marriage .license was issued at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon by : County Clerk Bentley to Joseph Warttman and -Miss Gertrude Cunningham Logan, both of Cedar Falls: Mr.'Warttman is the junior member of the firm of Warttman Bros.”
