A Bit Of History About*Early SettlersBy B P M MacPHERSOMTWO HOUGHTELAIN WILLSThf historical and genealogical study of the “Lower” Dutch Reformed Churchyard which, due to time and vandals, must of necessity be incomplete — is continued at this time with notes on the few remaining marked graves — which can still le found in this quaint God’s Acre,The Durboraw family, which car. boast of five marked graves in this burial ground, has already been discussed in some detail but there are two other Durboraw grave markers near the upper end. just back (4 the Houghlelain family plot, that deserve mention in thiSeries of articles. The inscriptions are as follows —1. “In memory of Rebecca Durboraw, Died March 13. 1839 Aged 74 years and 2 days ”Note:—Adams Sentind, Monday. March 18. 1839 -“Died, Wednesday morning, March 13. 1839. Mrs, Rebecca Durboraw, wife of Mr Isaac Durboraw. of Mountjoy Township, this County, aged about 74 years.'2. “In memory of Isaac Durboraw, Died August 15, 1353, Aged 88 years, 11 months and 13 days.”Note:— Adams Sentinel, Monday, August 22. 1853 —“Died. Friday, August 15, 1853, at his residence in MountjoyTownthip, ttus County, Mr Isaac Durboraw, m the 89th year of his age,SMALL GFtAVE MARKERIsaac and Rebecca Durboraw were probably the parents of the William Durboraw, born 1792 — died 1828, who is buried, apparently. in tihr same family plot. Also, near that of his father is the small grave marker placed over a hundred years ago al the grave of tlae little son of William and Catharine «Brinkerhofl» Durboraw3. “In mlt;*nery of Henry B Ftir-boraw, sop. of William and Catharine Durioraw, Died November 23. 1824, Aged 1 year, 2 months, and 15 da*ys.“Note: — Adams Centinel,Wednesday, December 1. 1824—“Depart**! this life. November 23, 1824, cffter an illness of only a few hours. Henry Brinkerhoff Durboraw, son of William and Catharine Durboraw. of Mount joy Tour ihip, this County. Aged 14 months and 15 days ”Buried near the Durboraw fnm ily plot is Maria (or Mary* Brink erhoff and although the stone at her grave has long since been broken arid scattered enough remains to piece together at least part of tts.' inscription —4. “Sacred to the memory of Maria Brinkerhoff, Died Augusi 10. 1820, AgedNote: — Adams Centinel Wednesday, August 18, 1820 —“Died. Friday night, August 10 j 1820 Miss Mary Brinkerhoff. the I daughter of Mr Henry Br.nker nnf{ F'£, of Bunnichtown, this County.”HEZEK1AH S WILLMary Itrinkerhoff, or Maria as she was sometimes called, was a sister of the Catharine Brink erhoff, trv wife of William Dur boraw. Tlais probably accounts for her bunai in the “Lower” DutchReformed Churchyard. There are no other marked Brinkerhoff gaves in this graveyard.In the Houghlelain family plot arc the graves of Hezekiah Hough clain and his wife. Charity loughtelain. Hezekiah was the first to die and in his will, which was written September 4 1839.and entered to probate October 12. 1839, he disposes of his'worldly goods” as follows:—1. “To my beloved wife. Charity, one Cow, one Bed. one Bedstead, Stove, Corner Cupboard. Buroe and a Sufficiency of Home-told and Kitchen furniture, all of ter own choice —. My Executors o supply her a sufficient quantity of all the Necessities of Life as long as she thinks proper to reside on the place where I now live and if she wishes to leave the property my Executors to furnish her with the means of a Sufficient Support at any place she thinks proper to reside.”After having provided for his wife Hezekiah goes on to men tion “my legal issue” —2 Daughter — Polly Houghte lain intermarried with William Walker.3. Son — Cornelius Houghtelain4. Daughter — Magdalena Houghtelain intermarried withHenry Ixitt.5. Son — William Houghtelain 8 Son — Abraham Houghtelain.7. Son —Hezekiah Houghtelain.8. Daughter — Sarah Houghte* lain intermarried with Peter Ber-caw,9. Son — John Black Houghtelain.In her wiTI. which was wnttcn August 5, 1840 and entered toprobate August 14, 1840. Charity, the wife of Hezekiah Houghtelain, mentions only her daughters — and her bequests consist solely of personal possessions —1 Daughter — Polly Houghtelain intermarried with William Walker “my Silver snuff Box.2 Daughter — Magdalena Houghtelain intermarried with Henry Lott “my Silver tea Spoons.”3. Daughter — Sally Houghte lain intermarried with Peter Ber caw “all that is left belonging personally to me.”
