In the car with Miss Kelley was James Nolan, of Torrington, the owner of the car.Sheriff Sherman's story is substan-; Gaily as follows: “About G:30 last (night just as I had gotten home for ( tapper, a worn in’s voice, very much agitated, called over the phone, say-j i ing that a car had been stolen from i the street in Torrington. She hung ■ tin without giving details. Knowing | that quick action was necessary I went out to fill the radiator of mv car. preparing to start out. While I was 1 busy at this Mr. Landry, who had been here for a couple of days on a special case called up and I asked him to ac- j company me. He .said he had just 'seen a car going east down the rn*l-road and we started in that direction.“When we were hetween Torrington and Henry wo passed a car standing beside the road apparently dead. Just as we passed I thought possibly this was the car we were after and turned to lt;ro back and investigate. While I was turning, the lights on the other car flashed up and it started oast. It passed us at high speed and we immed'utely turned and followed., It kept well ahead of us all the way I into Henry, and when we reached , there it w’as standing at one side of the street with the lights on and the 'engine running.“I drew out my revolver and stepped on the running board of the strange car. Starting to pull back the curtain. all were down, I asked who was in the car. Instantly the car started with a hound. I was thrown to the ground and acting on my first impulse I fired a shot aiming to punc- lt;lure a tire. It missed, however, and went through the fender as was afterwards learned. Mr. Landrv fired three shots, one of which did thr awful work.”The Scottsbluff authorities are inclined to push the matter further and are disposed to bring Landry and possibly others to trial for their part In ♦he affair.
