Czechoslovakia.^J This was Mr. Mellingers first and )only- trip to the land of his birth \since he left it at'the age -of 15 make his fortune in America. At : that time his native town Czertizna, j was in a country known by another Lb~;name, Austria-Hungary.m-iMr. Mellinger was attracted to srey3a*sehe!America by the fact that he had a brother and sister already over '^•here. His brother, Samuel, whoaway recently, was a prom- th merchant in Menard. His sister lives in New York City.Mellinger lingered in New York si: • just long enough to get acquainted itb if5; with the language of his newly]; adopted country and to fall in lovejw: jwith a brown-eyed girl of Ms own race by the name of Rose. Nineteen years ago they set out in a double venture, that of matrimony ^ and pioneering. They came to Texes, direct to San Antonio, and later settled in the small community of Blanco.In Menard Mr. Mellinger had an ^Holder brother, Sam, a well-knownmerchant.Blanco was too small to hold them for long and after a few years, Mr. Mellinger went prospecting, That was 14 years ago. His quest ended in Big Spring. He liked the looks of the town and its business prospects. He moved his family here and continued to prosper.His lifelong dream was realized when he returned to his native city on. the other side of the Atlantic ■ocean. He left it a poor boy and returned to it a prosperous merchant.Tqday Mr. Mellinger lives in an attractive, brick home on SouthjthSireid-?:^ Scurry.. Hig business occupies oneof the best corners in town.
