His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Spurzem, were pioneers.lie first worked as a teamster .for his father and later operated | his own dray business until he became a deputy sheriff in June,11903. shortly after his marriage.He left the sheriffs office in [19(H to became night sergeant of I the police, staying with the police .department until Pete Scharren-jbroich was elected sheriff in 1907, . when Spurzem returned as deputy. | For the next several years he was ;a deputy and returned to the dray j business briefly. Before he re-'joined the police force in 1913, he I had been employed as a body guard for Thomas Cruse.Spurzem was named night sergeant of the police in 1916, and became chief of police in July, 1917. serving until 1934 under Mayors Purcell. Dryburgh. Working, Arnold and Bausch. He left the city staff in 1934 to become a deputy sheriff under Brian O'Connell, and until his retirement Oct. 1. 1947, served undec O'Connell, Dan Buck and E. R.
