CHICAGO COPS FIGHTSERGEANT SHOOTS ANOTHER POLICEMAN BY MISTAKE.Supposed Holdup Was in Progress and Opens Fire on Two Detectivesin Saloon.Chicago, Nov. 29.—Policeman Cyril M. Donovan of the Cottage Grove avenue station was shot by Patrol Sergeant Joseph I'leroth in a saloon at Twenty-fourth and State streets.The wounded policeman was rushed to Mercy hospital and was placed uponan operating table at once in an effort to save his life.The shooting was said to be the result of mistaken identity.The Cottage Grove avenue police were informed that a crowd of men with criminal records might be found in the saloon, and two detectives were sent to investigate.The place was crowded and the detectives forced the men to line up along the wall preparatory to searching them for weapons.At this moment two other policemen -j entered and, believing that it was robbery, opened lire. The original two thought an attempt was being made to rescue the men in the place and the lire was returned.Thdre was a pitched battle lastingfor a few seconds, when one of themen shouted that in* was a policeman and the shooting ended.oS
