CROWDS 1AM NOEL TO SEE MOVIE STARSSpecial Train Brings Henry Fonda, Brian Donlevy, Jane Darwell and Others, While More Will Arrive Tomorrow.BY A STAFF CORKESJfONDKNTNoel, Mo., Aug. 22.—Twentieth Century-Fox brought the cream of its crop to this little summer resort town yesterday, and at least 5,000 persons jammed the streets to gape at the celebrities.By mid-afternoon traffic was stalled for a mile or more along the principal highway leading into town, and the jam grew increasingly worsq until after nightfall.When the special train carrying the movie people arrived here shortly before daybreak a dozen or more bodyguards were mustered into service to clear a path through the crowd.Stars Go Into Hiding.Before noon such big-name stars as Henry Fonda, Brian Donlevy and Jane Darwell had become so hemmed in by autograph seekers and the other who just came to look that they were forced into virtual hiding. 'Townspeople, already upset by the appearance here several days ago of Film Star Tyrone Power, today had gone into a complete tail-spin.All the excitement is being engendered by the filming of the technicolor picture, “Jesse James,” which started this morning in the nearby Dineville community.in addition to the aforementioned stars, others who arrived here yesterday included Robert Webb, assistant director and academy award winner; George Barnes, head cameraman and former husband of Joan Blondell; Duke Green, technicolor supervisor; Wiley Grant and George Breakston, character actors; James Lee, head publicity man, and his assistants; a dialogue director, “stand-ins,” make-up men, technicians and electricians and numerous other workers or supervisors.Others Expected Tuesday.Twelve or more other members of the company, including .several stars and character actors, are scheduled to arrive Tuesday. They are Nancy Kelly, who plays the role of Zee, Jesse James’ wife; John Carradlne as Bob Ford; Henry Hull of Tobacco Road” fame as Major Cobb, the newspaper editor; J, Edward Bromberg as the governor of Missouri; Donald Meek as Mr. McCoy; Lon Chaney, jr., and Ethan Laidlow as associates of Donlevy (Barshee, a railroad land buyer), and John Russell as Jesse James, jr. Also on the list is Ernest Whitman, Negro actor district residents will recall seeing in “Steamboat ’Round the Bend,” who will play the role of Pinky in the Jesse James picture.Tyrone Power has the coveted role of Jesse, Fonda will play i Frank James and Jane Darwell will '•play the role of mother of the James brothers. Donlevy indicated he probably would be on location for the initial scenes filmed today.Director Henry King and Sidney Bowen, financial unit manager, met the special train and hustled the actors and other members of the company into cars waiting to take them to their various quarters, scattered throughout the town. Fonda and Donlevy, delayed by autograph seekers, finally made their way to the duplex reserved for them on Noel’s main street. Guards were posted to keep out the curious onlookers.Most of the members of the company went sight-seeing along the main thoroughfare a short time after arriving, striking up acquaintances with natives and visitors alike on the street and in the various cafes where they ate breakfast.Jane Darwell, beloved actress of movieland, ate a' bite of lunch at Shadow Lake, constantly besieged by autograph-seekers, but didn't i seem to mind. “I’m used to it,” she smiled.Fonda and Donlevy obligingly signed autographs in the nearby White House Inn during lunch, despite the fact the management had roped off a section of the dining room in an attempt to insure privacy.Early in the afternoon a crowd of several hundred persons surrounded the duplex'in which Fonda and Donlevy had quarters after it was learned members of the press, - including a dozen or more reporters and photographers, had been granted a half-hour interview with all the stars and character actors present.The press of the crowd against a(Continued on page 2)
