Descendants orDescendants of Silas Flemings, who was born a slave around 1851, gathered at the Plum Creek Inn in Lockhart July 8 through 10, for a family reunion. The family history has been traced back six generations to Silas, who had settled in Caldwell County after Emanicipation, living as a farmer, a sugar cane producer, and a minister. Most early records show the family surname as “Flemings.” Some records show the spelling as “Flemmings” and “Flemming.” It appearsfrom later records, however, that the 1 “s” and one “m” was dropped. { An elderly grandaughter of Silas, Vida Cyphers, now residing in Austin, j had recalled conversations from her ! childhood that her grandfather had 1 been emanicipated when he was about12 years old. Silas married Martha Jones and Rosana Roberts Ellison, and had six sons and three daughters: Silas Jr., John “Johnny” Alexander, George, William, and Essex, and Jane, Anne, and Mary Ann.
