SEATTLE, Aug. 16.—Dr. M. A.Matthews, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, went slumming and declares he discovered In the business heart of the city a condition of squalor and wretchednessthat can not be found In any othercity.The house, a dryg oods box affair, according to Dr. Matthews, is located on Fifth avenue Just off Union street. In it is a woman, prematurely old, in the last stages of consumption, who told him an extraordinary story.The woman’s name is Minnie! Hamilton, 40 years old. She has; been married five times and is the | mother of fifteen children. Eight; of these are twins. Mrs. Hamll-1 ton’s first husband, a Seattle man, killed one of their children years I ago and w*as sent to the penitentiary. where be committed suicide. Previous to the murder of his child he struck another daughter, 5 years old, with an iron bar, breaking her chest bone.This daughter is now living with her mother in the horel and one of her children, 5 years old, is with her. The child is an imbecile, and Dr. Matthews savs is utterly unable to take care of herself. Tae mother’s name is Mrs. Amelia Rutten. She has been married and divorced three times, has seven children and told Dr. Matthews she was watttog the statutory limitation to marry again. Dr. Matthews told her it was a crime for her to marry.“The house is unfit for animals to live in,” said Dr. Matthews. “It is disease-breeding and unsanitary in the extreme.
