AUSTIN, DAILY HERALD, AUSTIN, MINNESOTAHunter ClarkFirst LansingArea SettlerThe first person to make a settlement in the Lansing area wasH 0, Clark who was known asI Hunter” Clark, so-called becausehe was an expert huntsman. Clark| took a claim and built a log cabin a few miles north of where Oak-wood Cemetery is now situated. Clark, inveterate woodsman, was more pioneer than settler. Hence, he sold his claim to William Baud-ler who took possession in 1855. When last heard from he was in Idaho.In 1854. Samuel Clayton built a log house and settled in the area. He was married and had several children. He was a strong churchman and early services were held at hia home. He was a blacksmith ! and is supposed to have been the first of that trade in the county.The first birth of which there is a record was that of Adeline Ruth,j daughter of P. D. and ElisabethVaughan on Aug. 8. 1856, 97 years ago today. She was married Dec. 6, 1877 to George Russell.Killed Building Schoolhout*The first death was that of DaHORSE-AND BUGGY MAILFreiert StartKmil J. Freiert was a horse and-1buggy mail carrier.The 78 year-old Waltham resident started carrying the mail on a rural route out of Waltham in 1909— and stayed with the job for 30 years before he retired.The mail route started in 1905.” he said There were two or threebefore me but they got stuck on the roads and quit.”The first carriers were paid $50 a month but Freiert received the princely sum of $72.Maybe it was the extra pay or maybe it was just the Freiert was adamant and wouldn't be beaten by the snow and mud.
