immmmmsrn The Way It Was!t Photo provided by Ben Ritter; information from Ritter and Star files'Pioneer Valley Photographer’C. Fred Barr was in an unusual place — the other side of the camera — when this portrait was made around 1940. For many years, he operated a photography studio on the second floor of the Masonic hall in downtown Winchester. A native of the city, he had an early interest in cameras and pictures, and worked with photographer Dr. James B. Wortham. When Wortham died in 1889, Barr bought the business and established Barr’s Studio, which he operated until his death at 75 in 1945. As a sideline to his primary job, he owned orchards along Middle Road. His daughter Barbara and family friend Helen Reardon continued the photography business until the 1970s. After Barr’s death, Winchester Evening Star stories described him as “Winchester’s leading photographer, a “pioneer Valley photographer,” and a “prominent citizen.”
