%Free-for-A11 Melee at Cedar Rapids Halted by Playing of National AnthemCEDAR RAPIDS, la-—A free-for-all fight, involving players,, spectators, umpires and police, was brought to a sudden halt here, July 24, by the playing of the national anthem. Members of the milling mob, wbo hid been lugging, wrestling and jostling each other in front of home plate, snapped to attention when the ‘‘Star-Spangled Banner’' suddenly blared out over the public address system.The free-for-all capped a scries of three fist-swinging episodes, all in the first half of the seventh inning. Cedar Rapids was leading Kewanee, 16 to 0, and Catcher Del Marquardl was needling the visiting batters with cries of: “Look out, now, here comes a bean ball!Chuck Kaiser, who was batting suddenly turned to Marquardt and swung his fist, and a fight was on, with Umpire Don Billingsley trying to separate the players.After they were pried apart, Manager Packy Rogers of Cedar Rapids and John Castiglia of Kewanec began slugging each other. Both had to go to the hospital to have mouth wounds stitched.The Rogers and Castiglia scrap launched a general melee among the players. Two spectators jumped from the stands, but did not throw any punches. A man in civilian clothes ran out of the Kewanee dugout and got into the fight. Rogers said the man in civilian clothes from the- dug-out was Jack Jackson, Kewanee shortstop who had retired with an injured hand ^earlier in the game.When the battle was''at its height, the public address operator. Bob Hahn, inserted a platter with the national anthem and turned up the volume. That brought everyone to pttenUon, and when the music had ceased tempers were cooled off.
