It Is a case of mis-emeanor, in which Mr. Deneen was en-itled to $3 a conviction, as in yester-ay’s case—the people against Ed Wager, Burt Wade, Claude Yarnell and •scar Bauman. These men were in-icted on December 31, 1S97. for book-laking. All four men pleaded guilty, •ere fined, and the case disposed of on arch 12, 1898. In the indictment it as presented that one Ed Wagner, lie Burt Wade, one Claude Varnell and lie Oscar Bauman, on the first day of December, 1897, in said County of Cook,; the State of Illinois aforesaid, upon location then and there commonly notvn as number two hundred and ixty-nine South Clark street, in the ity of Chicago, in the State of Illi-ois (Count 1) did then and there un-lwfully and willfully keep a certain rom and a certain book therein con-lined for the purpose then and there f unlawfully recording and registering ots and wagers, and the jurors afore-aid, etc., etc.nd then this Republican newspaper prods to show how the now Republican rernor made 5400 where he was entitled $20 in fees while he was the Republican te’s Attorney of Cook County. It was t a simple thing and was accomplished changing a word or two about so as to ke twenty counts out of one indictment, king each word changed net $20 more to fee grab.
