The above cut should be one of un usual interest to the people of Bedford and to all who have ever enjoyed the pleasure of an acquaintance with her people. It presents a group of the likness of fifteen of her mothers, grand-mothers and great-grand-moth ers. All widowes but one. We are in debted to Mrs. Thomas McCracken for the original picture. Her respect for old age and love of old people gener ally suggested to her the idea of get ting together as many of the old ladies of Bedford, as she conveniently could for a social visit. Mr. Forney our leading artist, kindly proposed that if when together they would call at his gallery he would take their picture in a coroup. The eleventh of October 1892 is the date af eldest son, Dr. M. C. Connett. She is now and has been, for nearly sixty years a faithful member of the Baptist church. Her only daughter, Mrs. Jane Hovey, is living in Missouri at the age of sixty years. She has al ways been a woman of great energy, industry and force of character. Her education was only of that limited character to be obtained in the earlier years of this century. Mrs. Connett’s health is still good and she bids fair to live many a year yet. Mrs. Connett has quite a number of great grand children. (No. 2.) Hester Moore was born May 25th, 1812, in Madison County, Ohio, being the fourth of a family of eleven. She is the mother of three children, two of whom are living. H. B. Moore, of Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. which the picture was taken and at this writing Jan. 23, 1893, all are en joying good health and able to attend their several places of worship. In order that those having only ad parcial acquaint ance with some of these ladies may be able to deter mine their identity we will designate them in the follow ing sketches as No. 1.2. 3. Me. begin ning at the left hand lower row and numbering to the right, then begin ning again at the left hand upper row Xe. living. Abram Lewis, Woodland, Cal ifornia, Jacob Lewis, Walla Junction, Wash., Charles Lewis, Wadsworth, Colorado, John Lewis, Big Horn Wyo., Elizabeth McCracken, Bedford, Iowa, Amanda Evans, Bedford, Iowa, Joseph Lewis, Bedford, Iowa. She was con verted and joined the Baptist church in 1828 and has spent a devoted chris tian life. She was one of the first set tlers of Howard county, Indiana, and also came here in an early day. With cane in hand occassionly walks nine blocks to church and is active in keep ing house, enjoys preparing a warm meal for her friends, children and grandchildren. Has been a widow fourteen years. No. 4. The 4th picture in the sitting row is that of Mrs. Bauchert, widow of William Bauchert. She is in the 79th year of her age, born in Tennessee, but emigrated in early life to Nobles ville where she was married to Mr. Bauchert. Seven children blessed their Union of whom four are still living. Mrs. Lucy Cole, of Bedford, John Bauchert, of Noblesville, Ind. Sarah Dale, of Cass Co., Mo , and Cath erine, wife of Henry Parker, of this city. Mrs. Bauchert has lived a devoted Christian life and is held in high es teem by all who know her. No.1. Rura G., Connert was born in Schuylkill County, Pensylvania, on Jan. 31st, 1809. She is now 84 years old. Her maiden name was Coleman. At the age of about twenty she came west to Ohio with her brother. In about 1830 she was married to William Connett. She was the mother of nine children—five of whom are now liv ing. Four of her sons did service dur ing the war. One son, eldest, Harvey died in the army, from wound receiv ed. Her long life has been one of in dustry and integrity. Her husband died over forty years ago, at Madison, Ind., since which time she has remain ed faithful to his memory and never re-married. She moved to Iowa with her family in 1867, since which time she has lived here. For the past ten years she has made her home with her Francis Fordyce,of Bedford,Iowa. She has been a widow thirty-four years. Her husband was an officer of the Ohio state militia. At the age of fif teen she united with the Methodist Episcopal church and still retains her membership. She came to Iowa in 1855 and to Taylor county in 1857. She retains her strength of body and mind well, being able to care for herself and room. Does fine needle work, often without glasses. No. 3. Mary J. Lewis was the thir teenth child of Jacob VanMeter, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, was born Oct. 11th, 1811. Married William Lew is in 1828 moved to Kokomo, Indiana, in 1847 moved to Taylor County, Iowa, where she still resides. She is the mother of thirteen children, six have gone to the home beyond. Seven are No. 5, is a like ness of Mrs. Mar tha Laird, widow of Levi Laird, who died March 18, 1889, in this city. Mrs. Laird is now 72 years of age. She was a native of Kentucky, moved to Indiana in an early day where she was united in marriage to Levi Laird, and soon after their marriage, moved to Lee county, Iowa, where they remain ed about thirty years, came to Taylor county in the year 1870 and have spent most of their time in Bedford since that date. Mrs. Laird is the mother of ten children. When the country called for volunteers to save the Union, Mrs. Laird furnished a hus band, two sons and a son-in-law, en during great hardships in careing for her family during their absence. She is a kind hearted, good women, spends much of her time in Visiting the sick and comforting the afflicted. We omit the names of children for want, Of Space. a
