The town is about tho ugliest in tho province of l'oson, and that is not saying much good of it. It seems to me to have been selected on purpose to render the prisoners melancholy and their punish-niant easier. It wo* nearly ten o'clock when I reached tho prison and applied for permission to soo his Grace, the incarcerated Archbishop of Posen. Before being allowed to enter, I had to exhibit iny credentials us your correspondent. My application struck the Prussian official unfavourably. for he curtly said, You can’t sec him. I then produced my letters of in troductlon from tho Berlin magnates, and he became civil; but, however, without consenting to reconsider his decision. He said:— It is against rules to admit per sons into the prisoners' cells, and we cannot make a discrimination in favour of anyone. After a gixxl deal of persuasion on my part, he relented, and told ino to cotuo buck at noon. T returned at tho nppoiuted hour. Tho warden was busy, and so I hail to try my patience and wait. While doing so I wilue^cd a horrid scone. Three ruou wore brought in with chains on thuir arms and feet. They were rough-looking men, with desperate faces. Tho warden spoke sternly to them, and said, You have been here before. The prisoners protested in a whining tone, but the warden reminded one of them that he was not mistaken. I very soon discovered what it all rneaQt. The other two men were taken away, but the third was hundod over to a keeper, who took him into a hail-way, and then attached a heavy wheelbarrow to him. To this wheelbarrow the wretch will remain fastened all day, except at meal times, and he will bo locked up in bis oell at night.
