UNA MAE CARLISLE FIRST RACECIRL TO WRITE HIT PARADE TUNENEW YORK, April 24. (ANP) — Una Mae Carlisle is the first colored girl who ever wrote a song that made Lucky Strike’s “Your Hit Parade.”Two weeks ago her tune, ••Walkin’ by the River” appeared for the first time among the ten most popular songs of the nation. The words, however, were written by Robert Sour, a Princeton Phi Beta Kapna.After the hit Parade broadcast.Miss Carlisle went up to Mark War-now, conductor fo the orchestraand said: “I want to thank you for the wonderful arrangement.” War-now. conductor of the orchestra song. too.” Miss Carlisle smiled as she said: ‘‘You see. Mr. War-now I wrote it.” And that is how her identity was revealed.Last week she told the story of how she happened to write this song on the CBS program, “We the People.” “I used to spend a lot of time walking along a river, looking out over the water. Thecountryeide was so peaceful and Ithe children gay and laughing, as they played along the river bank. That, river seemed to become a part of me. and it was there that 1 got the idea for the melody. I called it ‘Walkin’ by the River.’ and today it has a very special meaning for me. For that river that is so different today is the Thames river in London.”She has just completed another song, “I Met You Thent I Know You Now” with lyrics by Stuff Smith, well known swing violinist.Born 24 years ago in Zanesville, Ohio, Miss Carlisle attended Ohio State universitv for one vear. Then she travelled to Europe where she j sans: and played the piano in various night clubs. She has also appeared on regular and television urograms of the British Broadcasting comnany. In fact, she has played in 18 different countries. Since returning to the United States in 1939. she has had engagements in Baltimore’s Howard theatre, Washington's Royal theatre, and is soonto appear at the Apollo in New York.Miss Carlisle has also made five Victor Bluebird records and is under a tivo-year contract with the company. She plans to write several other songs with the lyric writer of her first hit tune and hopes that they too, will be good enough to be included in future Lucky Strike “Hit Parade*’ pro-grams. . — ~
