In connection with the marriage of Miss Hannah de Rothschild to the Earl of Rosebery, and her con sequent elevation to the rank of a Peeress of Great Britain, it may be interesting to give a list of Jews how living who, though not mem bers of the nobility, wear British titles of honor. ‘There are: Sir Nathaiel Mayer de Stothchild, Bart., M. P., son of the late Baron Lionel de Rothschild, Sir Moses Montefiore, Bart., the well known philanthropist, now in his ninety-fifth year, Sir Francis H. Goldsmaid, Bart., M. P., son of the late Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmaid, a prominent member of the Bar. His nephew and heir presumptive, Mr. Julian Goldsmaid, represented Houston and Rochester in Parliament for several years. Sir David Lionel Salomons, Bart., son of the late Philip Salomons, and nephew of the late Sir David Salomons, Bart., at one time Lord Mayor of London, from whom he inherited hhis title. Sir Benjamin Samuel Philips, Knight, a prominent and wealthy merchant, and formerly Lord Mayor of London. Sir Albert David Sasson, of Bom bay, member of the Legislative Council of Bombay. Sir Julius Vogel, K. CG. M. G., formerly Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand, afterward Premier of the Government of that Colony, and now Agent General of the Colony. sir George Jessel, formerly So licitor General, now Master of the Rolls and Member of the Privy Council, who was shot at the other day by a madman, Sir Barrow Herbert Ellis, for merly member of the Executive and Legislative Council of Bom bay, and member of the Council of the Governor-General of India,now a member of the Council of India. Among the English Jews hold ing foreign titles are the Baron de Worms, a cousin of the Rothis childs; the Baron de stern, Baron Albert Grant, and the Countess Avignon, sister of Sir Francis Goldsmid. The English Jews who are now or have been members of Parlia ment are Sir Nathaniel de Roths child, Sir Francis Goldsmid, Mr. Julian Goldsmid, Mr. Saul Isaac and Mr. Sergeant Simon, Q. C. Mr. Arthur Cohen, Q. C., who rep resented the British Government at the Geneva Convention, is the oldest nephew of Sir Moses Monte fiore, and heir presumptive of iis estates. Sir Frederick Goldsmid, c. B. E. C. 8. I, Major-General in the British Army, and formerly Director-General of Indo, European Telegraphs, is a son of the late Lionel Goldsmid and a cousin of Sir Francis Goldsmid. He married out of the Jewish faith, a daughter of General George Mackenzie Stewart, and though never con verted has ceased to be a member of the synagogue.
