Stillwell of Braid-wood.Taking “ French leave, Mr. Stillwell, a soldier in the army, slipped out of camp and returned to his home town to marry his childhood sweetheart.A family minion M(^ ^ mf (,and reception to WELL,friends marked the anniversary In fho Stillwell home.Mr. and Mrs. Stillwell are among rthe oldest married couple* in this part of the state. Mr. Stillwell is 82 years old and his wife 80 years.Born in Canada.Mr. Stillwell was born in Bnins-yitle, Quebec* Canada, in 1842. His Wife, whose maiden name was MaryE. Dennis, was born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1844. They areengaged in fruit farming and truck gardening:^ near Bra id wood.In 1854 Mr.Stillwell came to America, settling In Atmaham, TT17At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted as a member of Company 1 of theC. a. tmt,LWKLt. . _ „ ....2«th Ilinois infantry, serving for two years, and after his marriage re-enlisted and served to the end of the war.Wounded in Battle.At the battle of Stone River he was badly wounded and taken prisoner. serving time in the Libby prison till transferred in the exchange of prisoners. While waiting for the ‘red tape of the exchange procedure to be unwound, he departed from camp without leave and returned to his Illinois home where he was married April lft,18«8. lie subsequently re-enlisted and served to the end of the war. Their married life has been spent in- Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. ~Helping them celebrate the anniversary were Mrs* H. M. Wright, a daughter, of Joliet; Mrs. K. J. Lyons, a daughter, of Maroeiine, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Wright and Miss Grace Wright, grandchildren, of Jo liet. Charles Stillwell. Jr., a son, of San Francisco, Col., was unable to attend the reunion.Mr. and Mrs. Stillwell have 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. They are both ambitious to see the next decade and believe they will. Mr. Stillwell works on his farm and in his garden, while Mrs. Stillwell does her own housework.
