V; r.llvBowie scored 126 points while Irving Crockett nipped Jefferson 74-73 for second place. The other Grand Prairie Eighth grades did not fare well as Jackson scored only two points and Adams 1. Lee did notscore.Mitchell Cantrell and Ver-nard Myers were the standout performers as the Lee ninth grade scored more than 40points in their division Jack son scored 17 points, Adams 13 and Jefferson 11 in that division.In that Eighth grade finish Arlington Carter nipped Jeffer sort at the wire in the meets final event, the mile relay to win second behind BowieJefferson got a fantastic 54.3 anchor from Joe Riojas. who had earlier given the Lions their only first with a 55.1 in the open quarter.Riojas followed an oustand-ing leg by Leroy Cruz. Cruz had taken the baton in fifth from a heavily taped up Lyn-del Sexton. He moved up to fourth and before the teams had turned the first comer, Riojas was in second.The Lions ran 43 50.2.Sexton, who was hobbled with a ligament pull, still courageously ran on both relays for the Lions and while he was injured he couldn't run so he threw his discus everyday. It got in second Thurday and Jeff also took second in Stanley Sweet's pole vault, and in Leroy Cruz's half mile.Cruz ticked off a season best of 2:09.0 only to finish secondto the winning eighth grade time of 2 05.8The Lion sprint relay tookviwiwy lieu a I uiiiivi «|Ufi UCIIUIC cfllU 111 IIICwas hit with a batted ball. third but Fry zipped a calledHIdistrictfourth in 48 2 after having one of the fastest qualifying times when they had a bad baton exchange for the first time thisseason.Jackie Rutledge gave the Lions fourth in the 100 in 10.8 and Larry Goforth had a 9-0 pole vault for four points. Danny Booth and Keith Fletcher were fifth and sixth respectively in the 880 Mark Kaulity took fourth with his 5 06.0mile. \Jackson s lone points came with Richard Villaire’s fifthplace aUe.Adams tallied their point on a photo finish when they and Irving Travis hit the wire in thesame time in the mile relay.They divided the two points because of the tie.In the ninth grade division points were much more spread out with Cantrell winning the 100 in 10.3 and broad jumping 21-9 *4 for ten more points Glen Eichman won the 440for Adams and Lee's Vernard Myers, who pulled off a major surprise with the fastest qualifying time of the event ran second. Myers was also sixth in the 70 yard hurdles.Cantrell thrilled the crowd with an opening mile relay leg when he timed a 51.8 and built a 45 to 50 yard lead before handing off. Lee, however, finished second to a very strong Lamar team.Jackie Harrison paced Jefferson ninth grade points when he took fourth in the 220 yard hurdles and sixth in the high jump. Teammate David Bishop came in sixth in the 220 hurdles after falling down once. Bishop was third when he fell. Clyde Skinner also gave the Lions points in the 220 yard dash.Barry Byrd took third in the 220 yard hurdles for Jackson and the Eagle spritn relay and sprinter Alien Temby in the 220 also placed.
