The loss will reach $75,000 and is partially covered by insurance.The fire was discovered in the boiler house of the mil I and the small blaze quickly communicated to wooden fences of the building and in a short time the whole place wjs a mass of (lames. An alarm was given on the, mill whistle by the night watchman and alarms were sent in from box 311, at the corner of tClruira and Water streets and box 27 at the Louis ville and Nashville shops.The tire department made a quick run to the mill - and live streams were played on the lire a id by hard work' the (larres were kept from communicating with the dry kilns, containing many thousand feet of lumber and the large plan ing mills. A strong wind was j blowing from the south during the progress of the lire and a regular shower sparks fell in the sur-roundng neighbornood. Next to the mill a yard containing 10,000 barrels of rosin and the barrels caught on lire a number of times, but were quickly extinguished by a bucket brigade. Oo the south side of the mill was a warehouse said to contain 15,,000 worth of materials and the entire lot, in eluding the building was totally destroyed. The flames leaped sky-high and roared like a cannon during the lire, making the scene a brilliant one. At least ten lhousand people were present dur ing the progress of the lireThe mill that was destroyed was owned by Captain J. VV. Bla*k of this city, and is said to have been one of the ltrgest in the South. Two years ago , the planing mill and dry kiln were destroyed and the loss at that time was very large.Karl Mautorsen, while running to the lire, stumbled at the comer of Augusta and Royal streets, sustaining s-vcre bruises about the face and dislocating his right shoulder.
