Long In Simple ServiceSt. Phillip’s rectory was the scene Saturday of a wedding ceremony marked by its simple beauty which united Miss Dorothy Kathleen Adkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Adkins, Statesville,route 4, and Robert John Long, son of Mr. and Mrs, John E. Long, of Portsmouth, Va.Father Lambert Zaleha heard the vows before an impressive background of white gladioli and cathedral tapers. Mrs. John James, soloist, sang “I Love YouBirthday CroupHas Dinner PartyMrs. L. It. Shaw was hostess Saturday night at the Fourth annual birthday dinner party of a group that have been celebrating their birthdays on the same day for several years.The celebrants found their places at a beautifully appointed table which was set to carry out a color note of yellow, white and purple. The centerpiece was of yellow and white snapdragons and Dutch iris and corsages for the ladies were of colorful pansies. A delightful birthday dinner was served and the birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Neill McGeachy, a special guest, and served with dessert.Those celebrating were Rev. Neill R. McGeachy, Dr. L. R. Shaw, W. L. Gilbert, Misses Jennie Neely, Jean Neely, Susie Barringer and Mrs. D. S. Conway.Truly” and “Because,” and Mrs. A. K. Gunn, organist, played “Love’s Old Sweet Song,” “Lieb-estraus,” “Calm As the Night”and the traditional marches forrecessional and processional.Miss Carolyn Adkins was her sister’s maid of honor and only attendant. She was dressed in a smart navy two-piece fialle frock with which she wore white accessories, Her flowers were a bouquet of sweetpeas. Mr. Long had his brother, Richard, as best man.The pretty brunette bride, escorted by her father, chose for her nuptials a white Handmacher suit and navy accessories. She carried a white prayer book topped with a purple throated orchid and showered with satin ribbons.Mrs. Adkins, mother of the bride, was in aqua crepe with a sweet pea corsage and Mrs. Long, the bridegroom’s mother, chose navy crepe with a corsage of pink carnations.Following the ceremony thecouple left for a short wedding trip south after which they will be at home at 2013 Parker avenue, Portsmouth, Va.(The bride is a Cool Spring high school graduate and attended business school at Lenoir-Rhyne college.
