Particulars have been sent for, and will be forwarded as soon as received. 1THE PROMISED PARTICULARS. ]Si. Louis. April 8.—A brief dispatch from St. Joseph says: Charles and Robert Ford, j who at one tims.beloDged to the James gang, j and were engaged in the Winston Biue Cut train robberies, have been in St. Joseph for a ^ week for the purpose of arresting Jesse James, * but being afraid,-as is alleged, to make the t attempt, shot him down at the corner of Fifth and Lafayette streets, and then turcn- , dered to the authorities and were lodged in . Jail. There is tremendous excitement over 1 the affair, several thousand people being od the streets. The wife of the desperado was on the 6pot in a few minutes after the shooting j was done, and wept copiously over his re* ( mains. The body of Jemts was taken in , charge by the poiice. Considerable amnni* tion and several weapons, including pistol and a rifie were found in the house where James ( has been stopping. jA Lattr Account.St. Joseph, Mo., April 3.*—-A great secsa- ^ tion was created in this city this morning by the announcement that Jessa James, the no* ^ torious bandit and train robber, had been shot ] and killed here in St. Joseph. The news spread with great rapidity, but most people . received it with doubt until an investigation established the fact beyond question. Then J the excitement became more and more intense, 1 and crowds of people ruohefl to that quarter -of the city where the shoe ting took ulace, anxious to view the ,BODY OF THE DEAD OUTLAW, and to learn the particulars.In a small frame shanty ia the southeast r part of the city, on the hill not far] from the World’s hotel, Jesse James b96 lived with his { wife since in November last. Robert and Charlts Ford, two of his gang, have made j their headquarters at his hou^e, and Charles, it is said, had lived with hira: in that shanty, ' ever since November. Robert arrived about ten days ago, and the three have been making , preparations for a raiding expedition in which ] they were to start to-night. James and the ( two Ford? were in a front room together about 9 this morking. The former took off his bell and laid his pistols on the bed preparing to wash Himself, when Robert Ford sprang up ] behind and sent a (BULLET THROUGH Hlb BRAIN- 1The ball entered the back of his head, at the j base of the right brain, coming out over the eye. The Ford brothers at once made known what they had done, and gave themselves up. ^ They are now under guard at the court house. 1 The body of Je«se James was conveyed to * an undertaker’s, where it was prepared for , burial, and where a photograph was taken.James’ wife has telegraphed to bis mother the news of his death. A number of men \ have identified the body, and there is no ques- . tion about it being Jesse James.A Herald reporter viewed the body at the ( undertaker’s when it was being photographed, j He wa9 a fair looking man, apparently 40 j years old, with a broad forehead, and his physiognomy was that of an intelligent as well as*a resolute and daring F«an. The house lt;where James lived, and in which he was killed, , has the appearance ofAN ARMORY. Jesse was in the habit of wearing two belts with a brace of very fine revol \ vers and twenty-five extra cartridges. In a ] e-mail stable near by were discovered several fine horses, the property of James.The Ford brothers claim that they are detectives, and that they have been on Jame6’ track for a long time. It is believed they , were with the James in the Blue Cut robbery and that they were influenced in killing him ' by the hope of getting the reward which has been offered for James, dead or living, by the i governor and by the express and railroad com- i panies. lt;THE NEWS IN KANSAS CITY.Kansas Cut, Mo., April 3.—The news of the killing of Jesse James created immense 1 sensation in this city, although the report , was generally taken with incredulity and lt;even at this lat.e hour many unbelievers can ] be found. This afternoon, as soon as the news ] was received here, Police Commissioner Craig left for St. Joe with a heavenly armed posse of men to guard the body of Jesse James and protect the men who killed him.ROBERT FOBD. 1At the police station it was learned that -Bob Ford, a young man who has beeu hanging about the station for several weeks past, J was the person who shot and killed Jesse lt;James. Ford left this city about a week since and joined James iu the vicinity of St. ( Joe, remaining with him until an opportunity k to kill him was found.From the police it was learned that Foid, 1 who Is said to be a member of the gang, was ( under the control of Cray, and has been U6ed * as an instrument for James’ destruction. ’ Ford is a young man, about 22 years old, and ‘ looked like a verdant youth from the country.In appearance he is a mere boy and is the last person in the world to be taken as the slajer of the famous outlaw.
