TOKYO (SS)—Torrential rains pounded the Far East from Luzon in the Philippines to Hokkaido in Japan over the weekend, taking 21 lives and leaving thousands homeless.As Agnes, the last of three successive tropical storms, crossed northern Taiwan and headed for the China mainland Monday, heavy rain continued for the 12th straight day in the Philippines.Agnes, following on the heels of typhoon Virginia and tropical storm Wendy, veered toward Hong Kong leaving Luzon practically submerged after more than 40 inches of rainfall.The Japan National Police Agency said Monday morning that the storm toll across the nation has risen to 15 dead, 19 hurt and 11 missing since Wendy hit Shikoku late Friday.The agency said more than 320 houses were wrecked or washed away and 20,000 more were flooded.s menMore than 450 landslides . were reported in mountain areas and 260 bridges were washed out.The Associated Press reported six drowned in Luzon.
