The James R. Dickinson Library at UNLV has been given the life story of the leader of the Aid to the Blind movement in Southern Nevada. The biographical materials on Francis Marion Keele were contributed to UNLV by his widow, Effie Sholes Keele. The donation, which will be part of the library’s Special Collections department, includes an auto biography by Mr. Keele, pictures, news clippings and a history of one of the oldest families in Nevada. Mr. Keele, who was president and one of the founders of the Nevada State Blind Association, was born in Panaca in 1896 and died in Las Vegas in 1955. After he was blinded during World War I, Keele devoted his life to helping other blind people adjust to their handicaps and learn new skills. It was mainly through his efforts that state legislation was passed in 1951 to give public assistance to the blind.
