THOMAS B. SMITH PHONE 8134 WM. PENN HONORS TEAW Monday morning at 11:30 o'clock the William Penn High School student body met in the audito rium to give honor to the football team. Which won the state high school football championship for High Point by defeating Washing Street High School, of Raleigh, 14- 6 in Fayetteville Saturday after noon. During the review of the sea son's games it was brought out that the William Penn Tigers had chalked up the amazing record of 174 points to their opponents’ 25 points—and these included the best two teams of the state, Durham and Raleigh. The conclusion of the season breaks up the powerful team that Head Coach F. 8. Starks has been developing for the past four years, for many of the boys and sched uled to graduate in June of 1942. Among the outstanding perform ers were Capt. Carl Chavis, full back and probably the best line backer and ball later’ the Wil liam Penn has ever had. When Carl hits a line it gives, and when he is stopped one can usually ‘be sure that three or more players have laid hands on him. ‘Then, there are Philip Moore, quarter back, who is a good stunner and passer; Alvim Holly, halfback, also a good ball carrier; Herbert Stat on, halfback; David Young, end and halfback, a fine pass catcher; and Walter Williamson, tackle. The theme of the program is “Christmas in Many Lands.” Some of the countries to be featured are England, France, Spain and Poland.
