The series of charges against Saranzak stem from a series of incidents that occurred in an emotionally-charged situation af ter the accident. Witnesses said Saranzak asked for aid to leave the scene but one man removed the keys from the ignition of the 1959 Pontiac. At this point, Saranzak report edly reached into the car’s dash compartment and pulled a gun on the bystanders. He was quickly disarmed by the com bined efforts of William Dettmer chief of the Newport Fire Co., Ralph Hogarth, chief of the Bensalem Rescue Squad and Harold Buchanan of 464 Rodgers Road, Bristol Township. Dettmer emptied the gun, a .38 caliber police revolver, of six bullets and turned the gun and its contents over to Jack Farris, a Bensalem patrolman who just joined the force on April 18. Allegedly Punched Dettmer came on the scene with Robinson, who was at Dettmer’s garage a short dis tance up Newportville Road. Robinson was called by his wife who told him of the accident. Hogarth’s wife, Shirley, a nurse with the Bensalem Res cue Squad, was allegedly punch ed in the right eye when she attempted to treat a slight head cut Saranzak received in the accident. The assault and bat tery charge stems from this in cident. Patrolmen Thompson and Farris, aided by Bristol Town ship Patrolman LaMar Slemmer took Saranzak to Lower Bucks County Hospital for a sobriety test and examination. Results of the test will be known tonight, police said, “He's Got A Gun When Thompson and Farris first arrived on the scene they reported that one woman in the press of bystanders shouted “He’s got a gun ’ and someone else yelled “He just shot that man,’’ Thompson said Saranzak was “spread - eagled’’ on the ground near his car when he approached. Carol Eckert of 6658 Terrace Ave., Cornwells Heights, wit nessed the fatality. She told Thompson she saw Kurtz fall and went over to aid him but “when I saw him, I couldn't take it.’ She said that then other people from the neighbor hood came running. Tussle With Riempp Before Saranzak’s car was re moved from the scene, police said his wife, Janice, became in volved in a brief tussle with Bensalem Police Chief William F. Riempp over a black box taken from the trunk of the ve hicle. She was not with her husband at the time of the crash but was summoned, along with a daughter, Jacqueline, who joined in the ensuing argu ment. Police declined to disclose the contents of the box for family and police reasons but it was later turned over to Mrs. Sar anzak. Saranzak, himself, showed no emotion when interrogated at Bensalem police headquarters by Detective Robert Bell and later at his arraignment in Schultz's office at 1561 Bristol Pike. Lower Bail Schultz originally wanted to set bail at $25,000 but Saran zak’s attorney, James Fitzchar les III of Bristol, protested, saying he would appeal. A tele phone conversation with Bucks County District Attorney Wil liam Carlin resulted in the low er bail being set. A Herbert Levine posted bail for the defen dant who reportedly had in ex cess of $1,000 in his wallet at the time of his arrest. No date has been set for the further hearing. Damage to the car was confined to the right front fender, Funeral Monday In addition to his wife, the former Anna Mary Anton, Kurtz is survived by two brothers John T. of Newportville Heights and Albert of Cape May, N.J. and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Jennings and Mrs. Eleanor
