Charlie Denson of Cleveland, twice convicted of bootlegging and awaiting two more cases, re mained in county jail at Liberty this week after Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed a 180-day jail sentence rendered on August 29, 1957. Denson was convicted by a jury and had appealed the case. He was already serving a six-month jail sentence for the unlawful sale of an alcoholic beverage in a dry area after his probationary sen tence was revoked in another case. Denson, who was given a $400 fine with the 180-day sentence, still has two more cases pending against him for selling alcoholic beverage in a dry area, County on W. G. “Dub” Woods said. Attorney Woods reported that three other Negroes from the dry Cleveland area, Seabell Doyle, Willie Doyle and Estelle Statude mire, pleaded guilty to bootleg ging charges during the month's county court term. Seabell Doyle pleaded guilty in three cases of unlawful sale and received a 60-day jail sentence in the first case and a $100 fine plus cost in each of the other cases. Willie Doyle pleaded guilty to transporting an alcoholic bever age in a dry area and Estelle Statudemire pleaded guilty to possession for the puesto of sale in a dry area. Each was assessed a $100 fine plus cost. In other county court action, 10 persons pleaded guilty to 12 charges of swindling, one person was found guilty by a jury of driving while intoxicated, and four others entered guilty pleas of D.W.L Andy James Riggins was found guilty of D.W.I. by a jury and was sentenced to three days in jail and a fine of $50. Joe Kermit Short, Joe Dick Leggett, Douglas Gordon Burrows and Hazel Ter ry Barnes each pleaded guilty to D.W.II. and were assessed three days in jail and a $50 fine plus costs each. Swindling charges were against Thomas Beeson, J. W. Ballard, L. O. Manness, William Summons, D. B. Prater, E. J. “Jack” Welch, J. E. Williams, Jack W. Cockrell, Lon P. Cowan and L. M. Peter son, Jr. Welch, Williams, Cock rell, Cowan and Peterson were given 60-day jail sentences. Other March county court cases saw John Dorsey tried by a jury for carrying a pistol and fined #100; James Leonard Fregia, James Buford Bradshaw and Roy Clifford Austin, Jr., fined $25 licenses were suspended; and Joe each for driving while their Logues, a $10 fine for driving a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
