1 it E L A N D.The Atrociou* Murder of Mr. White*There it but one opinion with regard to the cause of Mr. Whites death. It is ascribed to a cause purely agrar an.— Mr. White held by lease, made in 1729, for lives renewable for e^er, 150 acres of the lauds of Bailyruiu, om the estate of the Earl of Portarlington. Tue remainder of the townland consisted of 100 acres of ordinary turt bog. The Earl1* estates having been brought-in :o the Incumbered Estates Cuuit, .. Mr, White became anxious to purchase the head rent payable ' j for the fan* which he so occupied, aud thereby to i come ! owner iu fee. He accordingly made a private contract with the solicitors having the carriage of the sale to ha* e it on payment of £710. When this arrangement came before the commissioners for their sanction, a difficulty arose as to the bound arive of Mr. White’s farm, and the severance of so small atowaland; and for the purpose of getting his own head rent he was obliged to purchase the turf bog in addition to bis farm, and for which he had to pay £125. The Coiumis-sisuers of the Incumbered Estates Court then gratited bun a deed by which he became owner #f the entire towulaud ; they also issued an injunction under the authority of which he was put in possession by the sheriff of the couutj. Shortly afier Mr. White getting p *8*ssioii, several of the tenaute of the other towulauds on the estates of the Earl of Portarlin'• ton (which are also for salo in the Incumbered Estates Court), entered Bally ruin for the purpose of cutting turf and removing bog-mruld, uuder au alleged claim of a right of turbary upon the bog as annexed to their holdings upon the other estates. Mr. White caused application to be made to the commissioners for redress, inasmuch as these claims were not put forward iu the rental under which he had purchased. Tue answer he received was “ We put you in possession, and you must protoot your «wn rights; we won’t interfere. Mr. White then attempted to cot avay tho road to these banks, but was resisted by a party of from three to four hundred persons, collected from every dkoction of the country by the parti* claiming the light. Under the cire linstanoes Mr. White abaudouod the attempt. lie was then served with a WTitten uotieo, signed by about thirty-two persons, who claimed riglu to the bog as annexed to their holdings, aud as having u*ed it for years. These persous called on him to avoid a ioreible collision. anil te* viwUnnt® :c J
