BY NICOLE WOZNYFOR THE TRIBUNE-DEMOCRATWhen you see a student dressed as a famous rock star walking down the halls of Windber Area High School, you know it’s homecoming. And a Windber homecoming is like no other.“A Night of Rock” was this year’s theme, and students went all out with decorations. A stage, lighted pathway, VIP lounge, band posters featuring the couples’ names, guitar picks hanging from the ceiling, curtains, bouncers and staff all enhanced the homecoming theme.At Windber, in addition to the traditional themed dress-up days, assembly, football game and dance, students are exposed to a number of different events that make homecoming a w eekto anticipate.One of the favored homecoming activities is the wing blast, which made its debut last vear. It was held•rin the faculty parking lot, where not onlv the students, but also the com-wmunity, had the chance to sample chicken wings from local restaurants.“Even though the lines were kind of long, it was still worth the wait and (it was) fun to hang out with friends while eating wings, said Nicole Forish, a junior at Windber Area.Another event that students andcommunity members look forward to*is a colorful 20-minute display of fireworks held at the Windber Recreation Park.“I like how evervbody sets aside* Vtheir differences to watch the fire-w’orks together,” senior Nathan Weaver said.The fireworks exhibition followed a bonfire and meet the court night.Spirit night, w hich encourages students to take part in fun activities to raise excitement for the football game, was hosted the next evening in the high school gymnasium.‘The competition between theWoznyE3THE TRIBUNE-DEMOCRATSunday, September 30, 2007seniors and juniors w as interesting. It was funny to watch the two groups battle it out, sophomore Levi Allison commented.Homecoming week reached its peak Friday at the football game against Berlin BrothersvaUey. The courtappeared in formal dress and was driven around the stadium bv differ-ent modes of transportation ranging from flashv cars to boats.The court consisted of Brandon Shetler and Alex Maluchnik. BrettStudinarv and Laura Devarmin, Ryan» *Romano and Jessica Pipon, VincentPaczek and Alexis Lapinsky, VincentWalls and Julie Sloan, Taylor Keiperand Kayla Cominskv, Michael Webb * *and Laina Karosic, Jon Forensic and Jennifer Ulatskv, Trent Moss and Nicole Naugle, Frank DiLoreto and Sierra Steele, and Andrew Hunter and Caitlin Borischak.Also on the court were junior representatives Jarod Spinelli and Stephanie Stone, sophomore representatives Travis Brehm and Angie Zankey, and freshmen representatives Mitch Grohal and Bobbv Jo Stiffev.wJoev Burkhard and Eryn Marshv mwere this vear’s crown bearers.wHomecoming week ended with the high school dance Saturday evening. Homecoming truly is unique to(Windber).
