Community college director says 'Barefoot will tickle audienceCourtesy photo/GCCCCorrie, played by Garden City freshman Laura Regan, and Paul/' played by Adam DeWitt, Scott City sophomore, practice for this weekend's Barefoot in the Park performances.By ANDREW BACHStaff WriterNewlyweds move into an apart ment in New York City High jinksensue.That’s the basic premise for Neil Simon’s classic play“Barefoot in the Park.” The play kicks off the Garden City Community College theater season this weekend.The curtain opens at 8 tonight at the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building’s auditorium on the college campus.“This is a show that a lot of people know the story and it’s got a lot of laughs,” show director Dennis Johnson said.Laura Regan of Garden City and Adam DeWitt of Scott City portray the young New York couple that is the show’s focal point.The cast is rounded out byDavid Irwin and Dawn Pittillo of Garden City Adam Rafferty of Rossville and Takaaki Otawa, an international student from Japan.Johnson chose this show because it had popular appeal and it presented a challenge for his students.Cast members met that chal lenge through exhaustive rehearsal, Johnson said. Students spent 21 hours a week on stage making sure the play was ready for the public, he said, and that’s not counting time spent constructing the set and memorizing lines.“They’ve put in some quality hours so far,” Johnson said. “Usually we’re a little rushed going into the last weeks, but we’re in a good place. It’s going to be a great show. ”So far, the only thing missing is the audience, Johnson said.“Right now they’re just jokes with no payoff,” he said. “It’ll be a good experience for the actors to. va'V'Bv*.get the audience response.”Robert Redford and Elizabeth Ashley made the play famous during its Broadway run. And the public is probably familiar withthe later film version that featured Redford and Jane Fonda. The play first opened on Broadway in 1963 and ran for 1,530showsJohnson said his cast will do the show justice.“I think the audience will leave with a smile on its face, or maybe even laughing,” Johnson said.“Barefoot in the Park” starts tonight and will also run Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for senior citizens and students. Tickets can be purchasedat the box office in the Fine Arts lobby It will be open one hour before each show and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
