The Echols Opera House.aIiH5( Wednesday evening tin* new opera house was thrown open to the public for u the first time, the play being McCar- ; thy’s Mishaps.” Of the play there is1 but little to say. It was written and j ( acted to make people laugh, and was j wonderfully successful in doing so; the j ^ singing was tine and the dancing exceedingly goo i: hut there we di.tw the line, it was a variety show—a verv good va-* ilicty show, it is true— hut that was all it j ^ pretended to he, and it is undoubtedlythe best of its class now before thei]faspublic. |The house was almost full, only a few seats being vacant in the rear, and the gallery was also well filled, 1 he audience | e was very select, embracing many of our very best people.I'li opera house itself was a pleasant surprise to those who saw it for the Lirst time. The stage and scenery were all new and most artistically painted—the centre panel of the drop-scene representing the state eapitol at Montgomery. Theprivate boxes were gorgeous specimensof upholstery, and the seats were allop *ra chairs of the very latest pattern. Altogether, it is a most creditable monument to the enterprise of Mr. Kchols, ; and an ornament—and a much nee deifj ornament, too—to Ikvatur.Mr, Kchols himself, at the close of theperformance, came before the footlights, j probably for the first time in his life, and j; delivered a neat, though brief, address tothe audience, saying how glad le* was to see them all so much at home there, to see how comfortable they looked, and to hope they would come often and enjoy themselves. His speech was cheered, j!4 j !but brought no encore. !((1tc
