Everett library joins in national ‘Jump Start’The Everett. Free Library, along with thousands oV libraries nationwide, is encouraging parents to give their children a “Jump Start” at the library with a new program directed to parents of first-, second- and third-graders.The program, sponsored by The Prudential and the American Library Association, is designed to promote library card signup and use among children and to give parents fresh, practical information about reading and learning.“Jump Start gives us an opportunity to bring schools, parents, businesses and libraries together on behalf of children, said Diana Megdad, Everett librarian.Libraries initiated “Jump Start” by contacting schools last spring. During September — Library Card Signup Month — schools that have agreed to participate will distribute the “Jump Start” newsletter to parents. The last page of the 10-page newsletter has a temporary library card on it, which students can exchange for an official library card in their own name when parents bring them to the library. The other side of the page is a sweepstakes entry that parents turn in at the library for a chance to win a college scholarship for their child, Macintosh Performacomputers, World Book Encyclopedia sets or Childcraft sets. When children return to their classes with their library cards, they get to sign in on “Jump Start” posters and receive “Jump Start” stickers.Local participating schools are Snake 'Spring Elementary and all the elementary schools in the Everett Area School District. Nationally, the program is expected to reach 2 million children and parents.“Kids who read succeed, because almost 7b percent of learning isreading-based, said ALA President Arthur Curley. The “Jump Start” effort reflects Goals 2000, the national education program recently signed by President Bill Clinton.“Community-based partnerships that encourage parental involvement will make the difference in the future of our children,” said Susan Roman, executive director of the Association for Library Service to Children.uIf we can begin working with parents early, making them a part of the process, all of the other education goals start to fall into place. ‘Jump Start' provides a base for that partnership,” Roman said.Entries must be received at the Everett Free Library by Oct. 31 to be considered for the sweepstakes.
