Thanks to a Democratic Legislature, the teachers were granted a boost in pay, in spite of Mr. Holt,Is Rush Holt still for and against” the teachers? Sutton. —H. C. Skidmore.Editor Gazette:I read v/ith interest the letter concerning hunting seasons. Our conservation officers argue that there are too many young squirrels to open the season in September. Any man v/ho is an experienced hunter win tell you that young squirrels can be found as early as February, and as late as November. The season opens in Ohio Sept. 15., and in Kentucky, Aug. 30. These states have plenty of squirrels, and a man can. get some enjoyment out of hunting them without freezing half to death. A great many hunters in this state start hunting in September regardless of the 5aw and the man who buys a license and waits until the season opens, is just out of luck. From notv cm T intend to do ny hunting in Ohio or Kentucky and just forget about hunting in W_ Va. I would rather pay $15 for a non-resident license and do rny hunting in comfort, than to hunt free in this state and. wear a north pole outfit to keep from freezing to death.Holden. —Neville Baldwin.Editor Gazette:The indignant reaction of hundreds of people with whom I have talked, coupled with rny own ire, over the foolish publicity which has been accorded the Braxton monster by supposedly responsible news papers, has prompted me to write this letter.Human nature being such as it is, I fully realize that some people, in striving to fulfill their human craving for the spotlight of publicity, will imagine ?J1 sorts of things. This is a normal and natural tendency and within itself is not considered harmful.A newspaper, however, bent upon selling itself rat .nor than performing a public service, can play upon this human inclination and create a monster ad of its own which can be very uanmi'ing to the pride of peopk who consider thos.is^ives intelligent. A good newspaper shoo id on more in In res ledin the truth than in sensationalism.I feel certain that this kind of widespread puo-licity, which has been given the monster, is the very reason why those New York City slickers were of the opinion that the people of West Virginia were a stupid lot of superstitious hillbillies who could be tricked into imagining that a two lane highway was actually a four lane turnpike. Now, I want it thoroughly understood that I am not venting my wrath solely upon The Gazette but upon all state newspapers who donated space to titis rnonsicr story. My only reason for writing to The Gazette is that I know of no other newspaper who can take honest arid constructive criticism objectively enough to publish it,Dunbar. —G. K. In securing workers, I find that it is not, ss a rule, the people who have the time who agree to help, but the women v/ith many responsibilities and small children, even as I. When calling for volunteers recently, one woman responded, “No, 1 don’t like to do that sort of thing.” i couldn’t help but reply that, “No one tikes to trudge from door to door soliciting funds, but society as a whole would be in sad shape if everyone did only what he wanted or liked to do.”With taxes and the high cost of living, everyone is having a difficult time, but I hope lhat when these volunteers appeal to the citizens of Charleston, they will remember that they are not doing the solicitors a favor, for these solicitors are devoting their time and energy for the good of their community.
