I shall never forget that happy summer at Harpswell, a quaint old peninsulartown up Casco bay. I don’t know just how we happened to go there, but how I pleased every one was with the old-fashioned houses, and the cottages built on the banks of pretty coves, ano the Atlantic booming and thundering and foaming right under our verv windows! Dear little cottages, with piazzas mul baiconiesand slender chimneys, and jioplars bending over the rlt;x»f lovingly ! Ard strong,more substantial tarm-houses, with narrow windows and tiny panes of glass;gardens tilled with poppies and dahluisand always beautiful; perfmney lilacs, Imeadows lrlt;*sh with buttercups andclover and tall marguerites. Deep green w'oods, fields of corn, and everywhere a great quantity ol roses. And such massive, rugged rocks, and grand views from the hills overlooning the sea; and all j over the island that peculiar hoarse, rnusi- jcai sound, called the “rote, ’ comes infrom the ocean and adds a plaintiveness to the lovely summer days.w mWe were a party of seven boarders atMrs. Bennett’s cottage at the head of Lowell’s cove. It was in realitv a stout old house, but some romantic wanderer had named it “Pearl Cottage,*' and as such we knew it. It was the most beautiful spot imaginable. Had it been a veritable Eden there could have no softer beauty than greeted us on every hand. A wide garden brightened the space between the bank and the house and titled th air with periume. The cove was snaded by huge willows of a hundred vears growth, and many birds sang in* mtheir branches. The soft, caressing .breeze tinged our cheeks with healthy color, and a July sun added a nlt;t unbecoming brewness.
