Rain forces low Fair attendanceParimutuel records fell at the 1974 New Mexico State Fair but nine days af rainy weather during the 12-day exposition held attendance figures far below records and expectations.The State Fair attracted725,468 visitors, about 75,000 fewer than last year.But the parimutuel handle totaled a record 59,514,354, up more than a half million dollars over the 1973 total.Closing day activities Sunday drew 76,087 visitors despite overcast skies and chilly temperatures.Crowned 197S State FairQueen during the closingweekend was 18-year-old Owida Crites of Clayton, first Union County girl ever to win the queen competition.Miss Crites, a freshman majoring in home economics at Eastern New Mexico University, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Crites of Clayton.Named first attendant to the queen was fkfarji Johnstone, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Johnstone of Albu-querqye, The Bernalillo County entry in the queen contest is majoring in physical education at ENMU.SELECTED AS Miss Congeniality by a vote of all the contestants was 19-ycar-old Bonnie Newsom of Socorro.Baton twirling contests ■during the closing weekend wound up with Deanna Baird of El Paso winning the grand championship.Beef cattle judging wound up over the weekend with the Charolais and Brangus shows.Northwest Fitters Inc. of Lavina, Mont., and Blue Ridge Farms of Greenwood, Va., captured the major awards in the Charolais Show.COLLECTING TOPAWARDS in the Brangus Show was the Pruett-Wray Caltle Co. of Phoenix.
