Most young people who know one musical note from another are or have been a member of a group.But being a member of a musical group which has a recording on area jukeboxes and available in city music stones is something else again.Thai’s the story on “Heavens Devils,” a group of young Oneontans whose recording of “Paul’s Song” is being heardin area spols habitatcd by teenagers.The song was written by Paul Sparaeo, who plays the chord organ to back up Fred Catella and Jeff Price on guitars and Chris Heller on drums. Sparaeo and Heller are 14, Price is 13 and Catella is 15.“Paul’s Song” was written and then taped by the Devils for a television show on WKTV jn Utica. It seemed to click, so the group arranged lo have it recorded by Eclipse, a firm in New York which (for pay) will record songs, give them a push in public and lead the young musicians to contacts who might be able to push the song into “hit” status.Paul’s older brother, Gary, ha: had a lot to do with the Devils’ success to date. At Paul's request he has stepped in lo manage the group, help with the arrangements, takecare of bookings and see to it that originals like “Paul’s Song” are protected by copyright.A teacher at Sidney High, the 23-year-old Gary spent a busy summer with the young group and has been so stern a task* master that the Devils practiced between 15 and 20 hours a week all summer. (They taketurns practicing at one another’s homes.)“At this point,” Gao* said “we are just waiting to see what happens. We have some local bookings for school dances.“Hut mostly we are waiting to see how 'Paul’s Song’ goes.” • Young Paul, he says, is now working on another song.•The Heavens Devils, Gary ex. plains, have a “rock and roll’* beat to their music but it ismore than that.“We think that our swig has gone over fairly well because it is an Instrumental. And the chord organ helps give the group an unusual sound.”The Devils have been together about five months.
