IT ISN’T ONLY the Republicans who are running scared. Publishers of comic books and producers of television films have come to the horrible conclusion that horror and violence must go. From here on in butter won’t melt in their torture pits.Parents, teachers and associations. stunned by the rise in juvenile delinquency and unwilling to assume responsibility for it, have resorted to the exp^iency of blaming the things kids setm to like. Whenever anything goes wrong, place the responsibility for it on the movies, comic book-,or television. These are the best scapegoats since nanny was a child.• * •COMIC BOOK publishers areseeking to get off the hook by vowing to do away with horror and crime stories and by appointing a magistrate as code administrator for a self-censorship system. Television producers have decided to do away with violence and brutality in the films they make for national distribution. One series says it has cut out alj scenes “with violence and brutality, drinking, murder-and murder weapons.” Ellery Queen will concentrate on scientific detection rather than bops on the head, and “Ramar of the Jungle will stress animal scenes rather than natives toasting missionaries.Somehow this seeing of the light does not impress me and I have doubts that the problem ofjuvenile delinquency will be solved by the entertainment me-diums putting out nothing but illustrations for the Girl Scout manual (with the revisions recommended by the Illinois American Legion). I feel that comic books, movies and television are about as responsible for juvenile delinquency as they are for adult
