Physician Blamed forDeath of Young Stenographer.Portland, Me., Sept. 22.—Charged with the murder of Ilcne E. York, aged 2.3, a stenographer, who died September 10 at the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary, as the result of an alleged illegal operation, Dr. Richard P. Black, a widely known Peaks Island physician, was arrested yesterday.Deputy Sheriff Wheeler, who investigated the case, arrested the physician at his island home and he was taken to the superior court,where he will be tried within two weeks. No plea was taken, but his attorney, Raymond S. Oakes, statedthat it would be not guilty. lie also said he was satisfied, through personal investigation of the case, that his client was innocent.Dr. Black is a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Boston an’d has been highly respected, being a leader in community work on Peaks island. He is 57 years old, is married and has an adopted son. He is held in the county jail without bail.Mrs. York was the wife of Frank York, a chauffeur, with whom she had not been living for seven weeks. She was seen at a dance Saturday night, September 8, with another girl, and the alleged operation took place at a Vesper street house the next day. She died Sept. 10, and an autopsy was immediately ordered by Sheriff King F. Grahat^.Deputy Wheeler asserts that the girl made statements to him just before death that cast suspicion on the respondent. The indictment against Dr. Black is for murder and performing an illegal operation. It was returned by the grand jury in adjourned session yesterday.
