i'Take One False Step'A Univprsal-Intf rntKional picture, pro-dured and directed by Chester Erskine. screenplay by Irwin Shaw and Chester Erskine Now playing at the ParamountTheater.Andrew ............... William PowellCatherine . ............ Shelley WintersMartha .................. Marsha HuntWilliam Powell departs from hisusual super-smooth characterization to play a college professor in this film. But, he is a college professor with a past, one who. while he was a colonel in the Army during the war, had a way with the ladies. Since then, however, he has married and settled down. But on a trip from New York to Los Angeles to see a Mr. Moneybags about financing a new university, he bumps mto Shelley Winters, his wartime past, and thereby suspends the storied appendage.Powell becomes involved in thedisappearance of Shelley. Instead of blt;x:ng the hunter as when hewas the Thin Man, he is now the hunted. He gives his role just enough suaveness to be reminiscent of the old Powell, and, good actor that he is, misses no actingtricks. It is a tight little picture, well told, well acted (with the exception of Miss Winters, who seems amateurish), and with a minimum of dragginess, due to smart editing and scripting. The presence of Powell perhaps lifts the picture above the intrinsic value of the story; and James Gleason playing a detective captain does it no harm.Suspense is maintained throughout through the introduction of a rabid dog which has bitten Powell. who cannot get to a doctor.Humor and drama are skilfully interwoven. It is a lesson in picture makingand thoroughly enjoyable if you don't expect an epic.'Illegal Entry'A Unlv*r»al-Internatlon*l pirtur*. produced by JulM Schermer. directed by Frederick De Cordova, screenplay by Joel Malone. Purportedly from the secret files of the Immigration Service, the story tells of a ring of smugglers in Mexico, smuggling into the US human bemgs. Inspector George Brent gets wartime pilot Howard Duff to secure a job with the gang, which uses planes.Duff meets Marta Toren, whose husband, now dead, was his copilot during the war. Marta workt for the gang. They fall in love,as might be expected. This picture is no better, no worse, than hundreds of B's before it. It has its moments of mild melodrama, mostly familiar. Its best sequence is at the last when Duff refuses to turn back a plane heis flying although there is a pistolaimed at his head. How' he get* out of it is for you to see, if you want to.All right of its kind, but mostly stock *tuff.Take Your ChoicePARAMOUNT—Through Thursday Take One Fa se Step’ with William Powell and Shelley Winters Features start 12» 2, 4. 6, 8. 10.
