Family Pets Rate Love and CareBy GARRY C- MYERS, Ph D.Kindness to dumb animals seem* to go along with kindness and con* sideratlun for people. On the con-tiary, harshness end cm«lty to dumb animals appear to spring from a hard and Inconsiderate human heart. Such was the conclusion I arrived at when a boy on the farm, from the observations of the farm folk among whom f grew up. Such is my opinion still* shared I think, by most who read this column. Therefore, we parenls believe we should bring up our children to be kind to pete und other domestic animals, even to the creatuies of the wild.Value or FetaPets are good means through which we may cultivate in the growing child a wholesome attitudetoward the lower animals. Ail toooften the child is allowed to be cruel to a pet, in which caac he is morally harmed. Don't let the tot torment the dog or cat or torture any other pet.If you spend sufficient time and patience you will be able to train a child in tenderness and kindness toward the pel, almost solely by suggestion. Most parents, however, m order to succeed, will find it necessary to give the litMe child bodily pain to prevent it from habitual annoyance and injury of the pet Unless this child learns in some way to be kind to the lowly creature, it is not fair to it nor wholesome for the moial chat act er of the chiJd to keep thifc pet. Trainthe child or get nd of the pel. Children On FarmTheie is the problem among chlldten on the farm of educating them not to throw things at the farm animals, the fowls or wild birds. As I look back, I feel gia'eful for the way my parents taught me to be kind to farm animals, though I regret 1 did not always respond as 1 should to their wise Instruction. Not always did I willingly walk up a steep hill instead of riding on the load drawn by the faithful horses. Sometime* I hurried these willing brutes drawing the plow, mower or reaper on a hot day: nor was I always quite so conscientious about blanketing the horses on cold and wintry days as I should have been. Yet, as I grew older, I havegrown in a kinder attitude toward dumb animals since, thanks chiefly, I think, to the patient and continuous teaching of my parents duringmy childhood.Waning NoveltyAfter the average child ever six or eight clamming for a pet receives one, his willing and faithful care of it snon wanes and he will neglect it. if allowed Thereafter the pet may become ft. burden to the mother and a soutce of family irritation. The wise patent will mm to cultivate in this child responsibility for the pet's caie. If all persuasive measures fall, it may be well to let the child go without a meal foi each time he fails to feed his pet.
