19 PRESENT ATGriff ^Williams Program Nets$147,825 in Bond Sales;All Talent Donated. -5By DON SWEET.Eaat Molise, Sept. in.—An audience of approximately 1300 persona representing war bond sales amounting to $147,825 last night packed the East Moline high school auditorium to listen and dance to the ihuslc of Griff Williams, and his popular west coast radio and dance- orchestra.Thtj appearance of the well-known dance leader, his musicians and entertainers marked the third of aserief of theatrical attractions arranged for by the Quad-City Theater Managers’ association to accelerate the present nation-wide drive i:to sell bonds. Similar promotions ? sponsored by theater owners, film 'and vaudeville enterprises throughout the united States are Inprogress this month as a part of the Salute to Our Heroes campaign being Conducted by theatrical Interests. |The East Moline venture, which was Arranged for by Joseph Garpen-tier, fone of the three Carpentler brothers who own and operate East Moline’s two motion picture theaters, .was a success from every standpoint Its promotion resulted In the salejof nearly $150,000 worth of bonoB, it provided vaudeville and dance fans with the very finest of entertainment and dance music apd, attracted many quad-city residents to this city and to East Moline high schopt’8 splendid auditorium andgymjiaslum.It‘Was the first appearance In this city j of a nationally-known radio and | dance orchestra and proved that* although the smallest of.the four! cities East Moline’s theater mangers and public spirited citizen* are capable of doing things inmetropolitan style.aProgram Enjoyed.Although, last night’s program did notTget under way until 45 minut*. after * schedule those present felt tha$ they “were well repaid for the Inconvenience occasioned by the delay.- Scheduled to start at 8:45 the band did not make its appearance until 0 due to the fact that several of ihe musicians who arrived In the- community by train did not reach the city until a half hour or so before the start of the program.Griff Williams, genial and talented ;band leader, apologized to the audience for the delay, explaining that the war had affected train schedules as it. had practically everything else. Once under way, however, the lt;and and entertainers made up for lost time and for the ne;(t sixty minutes or more the audience thrilled and applauded to thewide variety of music, both Instrumental and vocal, provided by the versatile performers.Club Entertainers Score.*The vaudeville portion of the program was enhanced by three specialty numbers provided by artists from the Plantation night club In Mdllne. Those who contributed their services in addition to the orchestra talent were Linda Keene,mGriff Williams, nationally known with requests for autographs from 1 stage show and dance at East MolliThe event, which drew a capacity the Quad-City Theater Managers’ ress here and throughout the nation.Above Williams Is shown provllt; shone of Davenport is awaiting hi seph Carpentler, theater manager, wsN. Club Matinee singing star, Nancy Hunt, clever tap and acrobatic dancer, and the Sparklers, four agile, rhythm-endowed girl dancers.The vocal antics of Walter King, Irish tenor and drummer with the Griff Williams band, proved a show stopper. Betty Terry, girl vocalist, also scored heavily with the audience, as did Bob Kirk saxophonist and baritone.Following the stage, show the band played for several hundred couples who danced until well after midnight.Izplalns Purpose.art curtain talk after the rles Carpentler explained*uagers’ association is doing to make It a success.He stated that all the talent onthe show was donated and that the theater owners of this community had gone to no little expense and trouble to arrange for the various attractions which have been presented as a part of the campaign.Mr. Carpentler expressed appreciation to the school board for makr Ing available the facilities of the high- school auditorium and gymnasium for the event.East Moline Does It Again.Harold Ryan, State bank president and director of East Moline’s bond drive, told of the part East Moline and Silvia citizens are playing In holding up their end of the quad-city effort. He revealed that$147,825 worth of bonds had been sold to make possible the appearance of Griff Williams In East Moline.
