i 1862. He worked on a farm for a!w short time in Martin county, but there *' were so many Indians there that he dcame to this county where he located s' on section 26 Newry township. s'In the fall of 04 he enlisted at St. j -Paul and was taken to Chatanooga : where he stayed for eleven months on ; guard duty. He was not in an engagement and was mustered out at Nashville, Tenn., in September, 1865.; *He was married to Miss Caroline •Johnson in 1861. They have nine j children living: Thomas Thompson,Carpio, N. D„ Mrs. Ole Kittleson,! Moscow, Mrs. George E. Palmer, I.e I Mars, la.. Martin. Peslk. X. D„ Mrs. 1 | I. Nordland, Newry, Helen. Crosby,X. D.. Henry. Francis and Eddie at home.One son, Henry, was a soldier in the Spanish-American war. He had a stroke of paralysis later and is now I an invalid.After being mustered out Halvor returned to his family and farmed on section 26 until 1874, when he sold his land there and moved to section 2, Moscow, where he now lives.When he lived in Newry he was justice of the peace there for a number of years, and was county commissioner from 18*0 to 1874.
