TURNERS FALLS - Montague Police this morning were' investigating an alleged robbery-assault which sent a 76-year old man to.the hospitalwith a knife wound, multiple lacerations and contusions, after attackers entered his home Sunday night.According to police, Anthony Rose of 9 Turner Ave. was admitted to Farren Memorial Hospital following the assault -which occurred after 11 p.m. Sunday. A hospital spokesman this morning said Rose is in satisfactory condition.Officers Harvey M. Kellyhouse and Machael Saharceski on cruiser patrol were dispatched at 11:25 to the Rose residence. Rose’s daughter, Gloria Winn of Millers Falls Rd. reached the residence. just before police,' according to Chief Edward W., Hughes,“Upon^ entering they found ^ ROsi-fitaading, in the kit*. chen’ini.he had blood all over his head, face and shirt, and the officers noticed deep cuts over. his left eye, top of his head and right arm. Mercy ambulance was. called to the scene,” Hughes said.Hughes said that Rose, a former semi-professional baseball player in the area during the late 1920s, told the officers he was sitting in his living room when he fell asleep watching television. *“In his statement he said thatthe next thing he knew was that he was being chpked by more than two pairs of hands,” the chief said. “He also said that heard one of the persons say ‘Get his wallet’, and noticed that one of his attackers was not too tall, blonde, and about 19-years old. He was then repeatedly struck about the head. They got his wallet and ran from the house,” he said.Although police would not release the amount of money taken, Chief Hughes said the wallet contained “a large amount of money” as well as some important papers.Investigating the scene, Officers Kellyhouse and Saharceski found a chair in the living room covered with blood, and two broken ceramic ashtrays on the chair. Hughes said a bread knife with a 12-inch blade was found covered with' blood, on the floor.“The officers suspected that the- knife was taken frdnr the kitchen counter, the chjefpid/' “It appears that entrance was gained through the rear door of the garage by jarring loose a bar that ran from the floor to the doorknob. From the garage they went into the breezeway to the kitchen, and into the living room.”Found outside the door to the garage was a .pair of tennis shoes and a T-shirt with a picture and the words Key West on it, according to Hughes. Both leads are being investigated he* ■said.Hughes said, according to a doctor's report, the cut on Rose’s right arm was made by aknife.
