Miss America Title To New Jersey Girl; Texas Entry SecondATLANTIC CITY, N. J., Sept.11—(AP)—Miss Bertrand Island, N. J., won the title of Miss Amcrica, 1937, tonight from 48 other contestants.Miss Bette Cooper of Hack-ettstown, N. J., was adjudged victor with Miss Texas, Alicc Emerick of Fort Worth, second, and Miss North Carolina, Ruth Canington of Charlotte, third.After much indecision the judges eliminated Miss Miami, Miss Irmgard Dietel, and Miss California, Miss Phyllis Randall, two others who survived the talent contest.The five girls, all five feet six, had bubbled with happiness a few minutes earlier as photographers crowded about them before the judges called them over for conversation— “to study their intelligence and personality,” they said.Seven thousand persons had crowded the amusement pier, a half mile out ever the Atlantic ocean, to watch the final teststonight.
